Becoming a positive person, if you are not already one, can seem difficult. But, it is not always as simple. Choosing to think positively is especially important if we agree on the idea that we are what we think. Thinking positively and having an optimistic basic position has many advantages. It is much better than falling for the temptation to be ruled by pessimism and defeat.

But,  why is it so important to think positively What are the benefits of being optimistic and thinking positively? And what do we need to do to make a shift to a more positive view of the world? Can you really change the way you think and become a positive person?

Being positive is powerful

What we can know for sure is that a positive attitude towards life can take us to new heights, where we could not reach before. In that sense, we can say that  changing the way we think can be the difference between the person we are and the person we want to be.

We often blame others for our own faults and shortcomings. We think they help us have our shadow valleys in life, but that’s not always the case.

For example, the next time you have a stagnant project at work, or another problem, make an evaluation of yourself and examine the situation thoroughly. Think about how our minds often control how we react to people and circumstances.

A positive person makes many conscious decisions that make a big difference in their life. We have to ask ourselves, what do we get in return for thinking positively versus giving in to pessimism? Every thought and every decision affects our lives.

Being a positive person means some changed habits

Optimism is a trained personality trait. However, this does not mean that we cannot change our mindset and our understanding of reality. Fortunately, as studies show, we can certainly learn to look at the world with a more positive outlook.

One of the keys to a more positive perspective is to change one’s habits. The reason is that our habits can either help us to succeed or act as an obstacle that pulls us towards failure. Habits, good or bad, are inevitable and are part of our lives. Last but not least, they shape the environment around us, a big part of who we are.

Getting into good habits is not easy, not even for successful people. When the time comes to actually make good habits into routines, it can be really difficult to achieve. Therefore, it can also be difficult to be proactive and work to create good habits for all of us.

Focusing on being proactive and acting in advance, instead of acting reactively, helps us create good habits and become a positive person. In the beginning, it is just as important to set yourself the goal  of making good habits  rather than trying to get rid of  old, bad habits.

Below are some habits you can incorporate into your life to create positive thoughts. They will help you to be a more optimistic and positive person.

  1. Always find an optimistic view on a negative issue: one of the easiest and most effective ways to get a more positive view is to start asking more helpful questions. The goal is to find the good in the situation, to turn the problem into an opportunity.
  2. Cultivate and live in a good environment:  choose carefully who you choose to be with and what you do every day. What people you have around you, what you look at, what you listen to, what you read… To maintain a positive attitude, it is absolutely necessary to have supportive and encouraging influences in your life. Look for people and activities that do not drag you down into the mud, but help you reach new heights in life.
  3. Do not go too fast : when things go too fast, they tend to tangle. We think fast, we talk fast, we move fast… This is how we end up living stressful and superficial lives. To get a more positive mind you can move more slowly.
  4. Stop – think – focus: Do not make things seem bigger than they are. It is easy to lose perspective, especially if you stress and live too fast. If you feel that negativity is using up your energy, stop and think about it, and focus on what is important again.
  5. Increase the positivity of your environment: what you give you get back. If you add optimism and positivity to those around you, you get the same in return. The way you treat others and think about them has a big effect on what you think about yourself and how you treat yourself. Start by helping people, listening as they speak, and smiling.
  6. Live a healthy lifestyle: exercise regularly, and eat and sleep well. This keeps your body healthy and your head clear. Then you will have the energy to control your thoughts and track all signs of negativity.

  7. Learn to respond to criticism in a healthy way: criticism is something you can hardly get away from, both the criticism you receive and the one you give. The key is to learn to handle criticism in a healthy way. Start by identifying what are the facts, and what are the objective truths of the critique, and distinguish it from what are subjective opinions. Regardless, there is no reason to take criticism personally. Let it be. It is important to know that criticism is not an absolute truth. And if you can learn something from it, actually improve yourself in an area, it’s great – take advantage of it!
  8. Start the day in a positive way: how you start your days sets the tone for the whole day. So pay attention to how you spend your mornings.
  9. Smile! Positive people smile a lot, almost always. When you smile, you show optimism, that you have humor, respect and you create a good atmosphere. When you smile, you are actually sending a message to your brain that everything is going well. Everything is easier when you smile.

It is impossible to stop thinking, no matter how much our thoughts torment us. But what we can do is choose other thoughts. As the movie Peaceful Warrior says  : “Life is a choice. You can choose to be a victim or whatever else you want to be. ”
